While I was at work, my two-year-old daughter called me and begged me to come home immediately: \u201cDaddy is hurting me, please come home\u201d; I was shocked when I found out what was really happening in our house<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It was already nine in the evening, and I was still sitting over my report \u2014 the deadline was approaching, my boss was nervous, and I had to stay late. My daughter had stayed home with her father. I was sure they were having a perfectly fine evening\u2026 until the phone rang.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
On the screen \u2014 my husband\u2019s number. I picked up, expecting his usual \u201cWhen are you coming home?\u201d, but instead I heard a thin, trembling little voice:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A cold shiver ran down my spine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I immediately started gathering my things, trying to close my bag with one hand and find my keys with the other.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2014 And\u2026 he said I have to go to sleep. And I don\u2019t want to sleep until you come home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I nearly fell off my chair from laughing. I pictured her wrapped in a blanket as if she\u2019d survived some global catastrophe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Suddenly, I heard footsteps in the background.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u2014 Who are you talking to? \u2014 I heard my husband\u2019s voice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u2014 No one! \u2014 she blurted out quickly and hung up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
After such a dramatic finale, I had no choice but to drive home and \u201crescue\u201d my poor daughter\u2026 from broccoli, a bath, and going to bed early.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Sometimes I think she has real acting talent. And sometimes \u2014 that she simply inherited my sense of drama.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
