The hallway was unnaturally quiet. And at the same time \u2014 not empty. Next to Mark\u2019s shoes stood unfamiliar high-heeled shoes. A light-colored women\u2019s coat was hanging on the hook.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From the bedroom came muffled noises, a short laugh, the familiar creak of the bed. A sweet scent of unfamiliar perfume lingered in the air. She knew for sure it wasn\u2019t hers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She opened the bedroom door and froze.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There were two people in their bed. Her husband and an unfamiliar woman. Half-dressed, disheveled, far too close to each other. A piece of jewelry glimmered on the woman\u2019s neck. Mark turned pale when he saw his wife. The mistress, ashamed, tried to cover herself with the sheet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Anna looked at them calmly, without shouting, without tears, not even with anger.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI\u2019ll be in the kitchen,\u201d she said evenly. \u201cGet dressed and come out. We need to talk.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the kitchen, Anna turned on the light, took out the food and a knife. The blade tapped rhythmically against the cutting board.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Anna chopped the vegetables slowly and carefully. The knife tapped steadily, almost soothingly. Mark and the woman sat at the table, tense, not understanding why they had been called into the kitchen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Anna placed the plates in front of them and sat down opposite.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cLet\u2019s have breakfast first,\u201d she said calmly. \u201cI\u2019m terribly hungry after my shift. Then we\u2019ll talk about everything.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mark and the mistress relaxed. Mark even smirked, as if everything suddenly seemed almost normal. He picked up his fork and began to eat greedily.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou always cooked well,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYes,\u201d Anna nodded. \u201cBut I have bad news. This is your farewell breakfast.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mark looked up at her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhat do you mean? Are you filing for divorce?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cNot only that,\u201d Anna said and suddenly smiled strangely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mark put another bite into his mouth. And suddenly he froze. He swallowed, coughed, and turned pale.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhat\u2026\u201d he grabbed his throat. \u201cWhat did you put in this?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Anna looked at him calmly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cNothing dangerous,\u201d she said. \u201cBut you know yourself how much of a panic-prone person you are.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His breathing quickened. The woman beside him jumped to her feet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou have an allergy,\u201d she whispered. \u201cAre you feeling unwell?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mark began to choke with fear, no longer understanding what he was really feeling and what was only in his head.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Anna stood up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cBy the way, I put the medication away,\u201d she said indifferently. \u201cDon\u2019t worry. It\u2019s not poison.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She walked to the door and turned around.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou will remember for the rest of your life how you ate this breakfast and thought you were about to die. And I will remember how you betrayed me.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Anna walked out and slammed the door.
